ORGINAL 1887 Hopkins Map 16 Washington DC: Shaw East

 (I'm also selling full size, high quality, color prints produced from full size scans of my original 1887 GM Hopkins Maps, with 44 maps in all that cover each and every corner of the present day boundaries of Washington, DC in our eBay store.  These are high quality prints of the original hand colored maps that were the first finely detailed maps produced of the city.)

The Hopkins Maps show many, many buildings long gone, many lot and house owner names from 1887, building addresses, lot sizes and back buildings (carriage houses, fuel sheds, etc), and even many wood frame houses on lots now occupied by Victorian townhouses. 

You've no doubt used the tiny, black and white, microfilmed versions with their many flaws, scratch lines, and small print outs, but now you can own a full size copy of the original that is ready to frame!  These maps always bring lots of attention when and wherever I lecture in Washington on house history, and would be especially nice framed on your wall if your house falls on one of the many delineated city squares and blocks.  I am selling my remaining duplicate original maps on eBay that have brought as much as $780 per map (if your original map is already sold, please visit our store for a high quality print of each of the 44 maps that documented the city of Washington in 1887!)      

SIZE:   Each of the original map pages is an impressive two feet, seven and-one-half inches wide by one foot, ten-and-a-half inches tall (31.5 inches by 22.5 inches).

Map Pictures:  I've included a picture of the index and five pictures of the original map. 

Condition:  The edges have small rips and tears at the edges, in the blank borders, but map is sturdy and paper is not crumbling.  Some pencil marks indicating historical resources.  The original index tab is removed.  Slight yellowing discolorization at top and bottom, but not nearly as noticeable in person as in the pictures.  Could use a professional cleaning; in good shape for a 120 year old map!

Shipping:  Insurance is required, as I've had an original map destroyed by the PO, and the buyer was glad he purchased insurance for the actual cost of the map itself.  In addition to actual first class postage, I also charge $4 for a brand new, 3 inch diameter sturdy mailing tube that you can use to store your map once it arrives.  Of course, several items can be combined to save on shipping! 

Map Key:    I've included a detailed scan of the Hopkins Map Key, which appears on each and every page of the Hopkins Maps (in difference places), along with a north arrow.  It conveys the key to such features as road type (paved, cobblestone, wood, etc), type of building construction (brick, stone, or wood), and sewer lines, horse fountains, lamp boxes, PO boxes, and even ground springs, most of which are covered today.   This map could explain all that ground water in your back yard!

The vast majority of the houses, businesses, and other structures on this map are now long gone, replaced with the large government buildings located south of the mall in SW DC.  It’s a fascinating map of a once thriving community. The map also has the old Bureau of Agriculture building and greenhouses, the Smithsonian castle, National Museum, and the old bureau of Printing and Engraving.

Particular Map 21 Inclusions of Note (1887): This map is interesting in that it shows the many blocks of residential structures that were razed to make way for the Dwight Eisenhower Parkway, the ten lane raised highway that ran through the neighborhood.  The only major surviving structure is St. Dominick's Church, which is on the map, and a DC Landmark today.  The remaining area was filled with 1960s era apartment building that are becoming historic in their own right. Particular Map 39 Inclusions of Note (1887): If your interested in Georgetown maps, this is the key map for you.  It includes the vast majority of Georgetown, save the southeast corner that is included in our auction for map #38 (east of 31st, south of O Streets).  These two maps cover the entire Georgetown area as depicted in 1887.   This map includes many interesting Georgetown buildings and houses, many of which are long gone; including most of the waterfront, that was then populated with mills, boathouses, bottling plants, etc.  Map shows the aqueduct bridge (Key Bridge today), mansion such as Tudor Place, burying grounds, Oak Hill Cemetery, and even a jump across the Rock Creek to include Lyons Mill.  Many old wooden homes now replaced with brick townhouses; find out if your lot had a pre-existing structure!  This map also includes an extension up Wisconsin Avenue from R Street to approximately Calvert Street, with homes, the Industrial School, and the Catholic cemetery all delineated; includes a portion of Burleith, then named and subdivided into vacant lots.

Map 40 Bordered By: This page includes a L shaped map broken into two parts, as well as a map of Takoma park, Maryland.  Southern boundary is Boundary Street (Florida Avenue), NW from 7th Street to Massachusetts Avenue; western boundary is Rock Creek Park from Mass Ave to today's Connecticut Ave Bridge; eastern boundary is 7th Street (Georgia Avenue); northern boundary is Harvard Street (Lanier Heights), and Girard and Fairmont Streets in Columbia Heights.

Particular Map 42 Inclusions of Note (1887): This particular map has many of the early subdivision located in the northern parts of Columbia Heights, along Sherman Avenue, and most of Mount Pleasant.  It includes subdivisions by the name of SP Browns, Lewis, John Sherman, Meridian Hill, Walbridge estate, Holmead’s, Stone Estate, Todd and Browns, Purner Estate, and the SJ Gass subdivision.  It also includes the large Schutzen Park on 7^th Street and several large estates to the north; Howard University edge is located on the lower right hand side of the map, Lanier Heights northern tip on the lower left.           

Included Map 42 Squares (or Blocks): (read from upper left to lower right) This map delineates these subdivisions that were then outside the city limit, and had not been subject to the alpha-numeric system of Streets or Square Numbers.  Each Subdivision has the old block numbers, with the number repeated in each different subdivision.

Particular Map 44 Inclusions of Note (1887): Another fascinating map showing the outer estates and large tracts of land that are now completely covered with development.  It includes Gallaudet University, Eckington, Ivy City, Montello, Rosedale, Isherwood, and reform School farm in NE Washington.  Also the communities in SE Washington that include: Anacostia, Bennings, Glendale, Lincoln, Burrville, Marshall, Agassiz Park, Creston, Easton, Garfield, Good Hope, Barry Farm, Potomac City, St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Giesboro Point (Bolling Air Force Base site), and Oxen Run.
