Like most of my work, these paintings are exercises
in the unconscious. It often isn't until the painting is
finished that I notice things that while I was working
I was completely unaware of, like a crack of sunlight in 
a verdigris sky or the glow of sunset on the side of what
could be a hill or a bridge.

I only see things when the paintings are finished. I never
plan where they will go. This keeps the paintings fresh
for me so they never feel contrived or forced. Each one
is a unique experience for me.

Freud wrote that only during sleep are we relaxed
enough to let unconscious knowledge become 
conscious in the form of our dreams. When I
am painting, I find that it happens then also, and for me
this is one of the best parts about being an artist.
