U.S.S. ALABAMA
WW II BATTLESHIP
By Arthur Beaumont (1890-1978)

The Buyer Has The Choice of One Litho

Watercolor on paper                                                            Signed lower right, 1944
Autographed in pencil                                                        LR
Unframed 13 1/4" L x 10" H

Presented is an original lithograph by famed WW II Combat Artist, Arthur Beaumont (1890-1978) of the battleship USS Alabama. It is signed and dated in the lower right and in addition is autographed to Comdr Leyden with best regards. This is one of a group of five WW II lithographs all of which are dated 1944 and autographed to the same officer. They were done while he was serving as a combat artist and consequently are very rare. Copies of his WW II lithographs are being sold by the California Watercolor Company at prices ranging from $145 to over $295.00 each.

The USS Alabama (BB-60), a South Dakota-class battleship, was the sixth completed ship named Alabama of the United States Navy, however she was only the third commissioned ship with that name. Alabama was commissioned in 1942 and served in World War II in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. She was decommissioned in 1947 and assigned to the reserve duty. She retired in 1962. In 1964, Alabama was taken to Mobile Bay and opened as a museum ship the following year. The ship was added to the National Historic Landmark registry in 1986.
As far as we know, Land And Sea Collection is the sole source for five original autographed ship portraits of his work.

          We currently have for sale:
      • USS Enterprise - Aircraft carrier -  Upper left
      • Torpedo Boat (PT, MTB) -               Upper right
      • USS Louisville - Cruiser -                Lower left
      • Destroyer -                                          Lower right
      • USS Alabama - Battleship -            Bottom center

THE ARTIST: Arthur Edwaine Beaumont (1890-1978) immigrated to America via Canada in 1909. Beginning in 1932, until the time of his death in 1978, he  focused his long career as a painter portraying the history of the United States Navy. Numerous renderings of naval (and civilian) subjects are found in official naval collections, museum collections, and many private collections around the world.

He studied extensively in California, London and Paris, and with noted artists, Stanton MacDonald-Wright in Los Angeles, William Russell Flint and Frank Brangwyn in London and Jean-Paul Laurens in Paris.

In the 1930s, he became a Lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserve and began producing the first of many watercolors depicting battleships and other naval subjects.

During World War II, he was a combat artist, documenting naval battles. A series of these works were published in National Geographic magazine. After the war he continued producing watercolors of naval activities in China, Japan, Guam, Vietnam and the Antarctic. Although he painted depictions of landscape and figurative subjects and worked as a commissioned portrait artist, Beaumont is best known for his watercolors of ships and harbor scenes.

In 1989, a book titled Arthur Beaumont, Naval Artist, which documented his life was published by the Laguna Art Museum.
