This prehistoric fossil was found in the Sahara desert in Morocco, which was covered by ocean 450 million years ago. Cephalopods are an ancient group that appeared some time in the late Cambrian era, several million years before the first primitive fish began swimming in the ocean and also before the first mammals appeared. Cephalopods were once one of the dominant life forms in the world's oceans. Orthoceras cephalopods were a prehistoric squid-like sea creatures which had a long, cone-shaped shell, which expanded by adding larger body chambers to it and their fossils sometimes have an iridescent quality. They are found in a black obsidian-like stone.
