A BLACK AND WHITE 8X10 GLOSSY STILL OF ME, JOY WURGAFT, WHEN I WAS A MEMBER OF THE "OUR GANG" AT HAL ROACH STUDIOS IN 1934. I WAS 6 YEARS OLD AT THAT TIME AND THIS WAS MY FIRST MOVIE, THE OUR GANG COMEDY, "MIKE FRIGHT" WITH SPANKY McFARLAND AND SCOTTY BECKETT.

WE WERE AUDITIONING AT THE LOCAL RADIO STATION FOR A TALENT SHOW CONTEST AND I WAS SINGING "I WANNA GO BACK TO MY LITTLE GRASS SHACK." I wore my Estin Burkes Dancing Scool costime I had used in dance recitals before I was put under contract to Hal Roach so I didn't have to go to "WARDROBE" to get the right costume. The studio did send me to the famous Makeup Artist, MAX FACTOR to be made up for my screen test.

After I was hired, I earned $35.00 a week which was a nice amount of money in 1934.My parents were very happy! NOW, IT'S 73 YEARS LATER AND I'VE BECOME 80 YEARS OLD and what can you buy for $35.00? HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN? IT SEEMS LIKE ONLY YESTERDAY!
