Desmoceras latidorsatum, 100 million years old (Late Cretaceous Period) Ammonites are extinct mollusks related to the modern squid, octopus and Chambered Nautilus. Under certain conditions related to fossilization, the nacreous shell becomes highly iridescent; the resulting gemlike material is called "ammolite."
