This listing is a sale for a framed painting by Clair V. Fry. Media: Oil on wood. Measurements (framed): 28 inches x 76 inches (2 feet 4 inches by 6 feet 4 inches). Without frame would likely be 2 feet x 6 feet. Frame appears to be mahogany. Provenance: Likely to be the largest work by Clair V. Fry in existence. This painting was commissioned by my parents in 1970, along with 3 portraits of us kids. We sat for Mr. Fry and he delivered the portraits and this oil painting in the summer of 1972. The painting was framed at Dayton's Department store in the Twin Cities (sticker on the back of the painting is not shown). My parents chose the woodland scene with the deer to commemorate our life in the Wisconsin Northwoods and my father's interest in hunting. We lived about 30 miles northeast of the Fry's summer home on the Mississippi River. The painting has mainly been in attic storage following my parents' divorce in 1975. I inherited it in 2004 upon my father's passing. Our family will be keeping the portraits. The work features many layers of paint, and impressionist influences with the building of light effects using color, and cubist influences in the sun's rays and flat 2 dimensional rendering of the objects. The palette knife was used to create the sky peeking through the trees, and the knife was also used to scratch in renderings of various plants and tree bark impressions. Clair V. Fry (d. 1995) is primarily known for his work in the Norman Rockwell tradition for Brown and Bigelow in St. Paul, MN where he was a graphics designer for more than 30 years. He is known for assuming the work of the Gay Philosopher series, and for producing calendar images in the Rockwell style for Brown and Bigelow. Upon his retirement in the late 1960s, he split his time between Arizona and his summer home near Hudson, WI.
