Bidding has ended on this item. Item:Old Great Lakes Indian Sweetgrass Basket Cup & Saucer |

|
Up for auction is a nicely made, vintage sweetgrass basket made by one of the Great Lakes Indian tribes. It would have been made for the tourist market in the early years of the past century. The basket is in the form of a small cup and saucer (demitasse size) and is formed entirely of sweetgrass, held in place with the customary black thread. The cup and saucer are all in one piece and do not come apart, and the cup has a little braided sweetgrass handle. At one time the sweetgrass would have had a pleasant aroma, but the basket is old enough that it has lost this original scent. This is an unusual little tourist item, and makes a terrific piece for display.
The saucer measures 4" across, and the cup is about 1¾" deep. This little sweetgrass item is in great shape with all the seams holding together. The only possible exception are a couple of small gaps in the binding threads, but this is extremely minor. The little braided handle is in perfect shape and still firmly attached. I have taken photos of all sides, and they give an accurate portrayal of the basket's condition. This is a beautiful vintage Great Lakes Indian souvenir from the early years of the past century. It will make a great addition to someone's collection.
