First off I must apologize to all those who were watching and bidding on this item before I cancelled the auction. I originally thought the date was '05 not '55 (after examining the handwritten note with a magnifying glass I have determined '55 is correct) and did not know it was Military, in light of this I felt I should cancel and start over (that was a hard call). This old U.S. Military punch set is a super piece. It was used to stamp dog tags and stamp mess kits There are 37 punches. Letters A-Z Numbers 0-9 with the "O" being the zero and the 6 also being the 9 there is an "&" a period, and one other I'm not sure of. They are 1/8" size and all look to be in very good shape. The "5" may have a little damage They even look like they have tails. The anvil and hammer are solid brass with the anvil weighing a little over 2 lbs. and the hammer a little under 1 lb. There are also 3 metal, tabbed plates that look like they coincide with the machined areas on the anvil. All of the plates are stamped and are in very good condition. One is stamped with the words "knife" "fork" "spoon" and has a round hole in it. The second plate is stamped "meatcan", "tags" and has a rectangular slot in it and a round area above the slot. The third is stamped with "2" on one edge "3" on one edge and "tags" in the center All 3 are pictured- 1,2,3 top to bottom in the picture This has got to be a rare set. I've seen my share of tools and this is a first for me. There is also a stamping inside the lid stating it was inspected by Chas. Snyder and some writing in pencil about the "8" being lost and something I can't make out (there is an 8 in the set though) with a date of what looks to be 1/6/55 . I'm not sure exactly how old it is but it is old. The box also appears to have remnants of military green paint. If you know what era this is from please let me know. Thanks and happy bidding!!
