Its stubbornly independent congregations played

leading parts in the schismatic history of Scottish

Presbyterianism particularly in 1717 the year of the

Auchterarder Creed and in 1843 when the parishioners refused

to accept the Auchterarder Letter from the

Early of Kinnoull appointing a Minister unwelcome to them.

This precipitated events leading to a new Free Church.
