Old Round Fixed Handle Hickory Basket w Awesome Patina

Up for auction is a beautifully woven medium sized splint hickory basket with a solid whittled bentwood hardwood handle. It would have been made in the first half of the past century, and would have been intended as an egg basket or gathering basket. (In fact, it may very well be a true antique of over 100 years old.) The basket features a slightly rounded base, a well-crafted thick whittled double rim with fine and even wraps, and sturdy construction, all of solid hardwood. It is nicely symmetrical - whoever wove this basket was an amazingly skilled craftsman. And just look at this awesome aged patina! This basket is an excellent example of "beauty in utility," and it will make a terrific addition to someone's collection.

The basket, as noted, is a nice medium size, measuring 9" across from handle to handle and 5" deep (9" to the top of the handle.) This basket is in nice shape for its advanced age. If you look at the rim, you can see where three rim wraps are missing, but that is the basket's only real flaw. There are no breaks on the body or handle. And the basket was so sturdy and well constructed that it still looks very nice. See photos, as they give a true picture of the basket's condition. This basket is guaranteed to be old, and this classic shape is still one of the best around.
