We
have run Tibetan artworks shop in Chamdo,
Tibet since 1945,and shutdown before 1951
for some special reasons. We reinstated our
store at 1978( The year of reformation of
China). After 25 years day to day operation,
We are now one of the biggest Tibetan antique
& handicrafts shop in Khamba (Kangba)
area. Shop is run by full-time Buddhists,
devoted to practices of the Tibetan tradition.
There
is no gainsaying the fact that the most distinctive
and familiar form of Tibetan art is undoubtedly
the thangka or thanka (literally a "rolled
up image"). To understand and appreciate
this unique style of painting, it is important
to realize its essentially symbolic nature
and that the figures populating its rich canvas
have a meaning over and beyond their external
forms.Mayadevi, Buddha's mother granting auspiciousness
to an elaborately painted mandala; the terrible
deity Mahakala vowing to protect the monastery
of Nalanda; Padmasambhava consecrating the
first Buddhist monastery of Tibet; a Nyingma
refuge tree; Vajrayogini - the fearful sky-walker;
White Tara with her all-embracing vision of
compassion; a yellow-hued Padmasambhava; Gautam
Buddha with scenes from his life ;Manjushri
carrying aloft his sword of wisdom; the wheel
of life;Mandala of Amitabha and a soft textured
thangka of Maitreya the future Buddha.
Buddha
Shakyamuni:
(Tibetan:
sha kya tu pa, sang gye, English: the Enlightened
One, Sage of the Shakya Clan)
Our teacher, the Sage of the Shakya clan,
was born in India and underwent hundreds of
austerities to bring his meditative experience
and view to consummation. He was the first
in this human world to attain buddhahood and
the first promulgator of the tradition of
the Buddhist teachings. He is the sublime
being who opened our eyes with his enormous
compassion and blessings.
The Buddha
Shakyamuni, at the moment of enlightenment,
invoked the earth as witness, as indicated
by the fingers of his right hand, which spread
downward in the bhumisparsha mudra, the "gesture
of touching the earth." As the Buddhist
Sutras relate, the sun and moon stood still,
and all the creatures of the world came to
offer obeisance to the Supreme One who had
broken through the boundaries of egocentric
existence. All Buddhist art celebrates this
supreme moment and leads the viewer toward
the Buddha's experience of selfless and unsurpassed
enlightenment. The earliest forms of Buddhist
art were semiabstract: bodhi-trees, wheels,
stupas, and even the Buddha's stylized footprints
served as supports for contemplating what
was ultimately beyond words or forms. As the
Buddha himself continually taught, it was
not he who was continually revered but the
possibility he presented. "Don't look
to me," he said, "but to the enlightened
state."
The first
anthropomorphic representations of the Buddha
are said to have been drawn on canvas from
rays of golden light emanating from his body.
Later Buddhist art pictured the Buddha in
numerous manifestations, but always as an
archetype of human potential, never as a historically
identifiable person. All forms of the Buddha,
however, are commonly shown seated on a lotus
throne, a symbol of the mind's transcendent
nature. As a lotus rises from the mud to bloom
unsullied in open space, so does the mind
rise through the discord of its own experience
to blossom in the boundlessness of unconditional
awareness.
Buddhism
is not a static doctrine, but a creative expression
of the interdependent nature of all things.
It is a means by which we can discover in
the heart of experience, not ourselves, but
a luminous and unfolding mystery. Buddhism
envisions the universe as a net of jewels,
each facet of reality reflecting every other
facet. Our calling is not to escape this web
of interdependent origination, but to awaken
to our indwelling Buddha nature, to see the
world for what it is, and to become Buddhas
in our own right - beings of infinite awareness
and compassion.
"Be
a light unto yourself," Buddha Shakyamuni
declared at the end of his life. Become a
Buddha, an awakened being, he urged, but never
a blind follower of tradition. Indeed the
image of the Buddha, transcending time and
place, centers us in our innermost being.
ORIGIN:
Chamdo,Tibet
PERIOD: 1800s
SPECIFICATION: this excellent Thangka
is gathered from a Lama in Sha-lu
Monastery,
Tibet, Still in Good Condition!
Sha-lu
Monastery Sha-lu
Monastery in the southeast of Xigaze was first
built in 1087 during the Song Dynasty. Sha-lu
means tender leaf, perhaps containing the meaning
of the rejuvenation of Buddhism. The original
monastery was destroyed by earthquake, but was
rebuilt at the end of the 1athcentury during
the Yuan Dynasty.
In the center of the
ground floor is the main hall Sha-lu La-kang.
It is a square, large scripture hall, the flat-top
of the center part protruding. Light streams
in through the skylight between the high and
low flat-tops. This layout was later called
the "Du-khang method", and was commonly
used by the Ming and Qing dynasties. The left,
right and back sides of the scripture hall are
closely encircled by several Buddhist halls,
and a ring of winding corridors are added to
the outer side. Monks can take a right-hand
walk and chant scripture in the corridor.
The second floor is a
siheyuan (courtyard with houses on all sides)encircled
by four purely Han-style halls. According to
ancient Tibetan documents, when the Sha-lu Lakang
was built, many skilled Han craftsmen were invited,
therefore forming an early Tibetan/Han mixed
style.
In the early 15th century
(early Ming Dynasty), the eminent monk TSongkhapa
from Qinghai introduced religious reform in
Tibet and created the Gelug-pa or Yellow Hat
sect It eventually gained the upper hand not
only in religion, but also in politics. He constructed
six famous major temples of the Yellow Hats,
which are also the largest temples of Tibetan
Buddhism, Such as the Lhasa Ganden Monastery
(14O9), Bras-spungs Monastery (1416), Sara Monastery
(1419), Tashilungpo in Xigaze(1447), Tar Monastery
in HuangZhong of Qinghai (156O), and Blabrang
Monastery in Xiahe of Gansu (1709). They were
all built at the foot of mountains, represented
by Blabrang Monastery.
