The Fifth
King Ngawang Losang Gyatso (1617-1682) was the
first to effectively combine spiritual and secular
rulership of Tibet. Among his many achievements,
Ngawang Losang Gyatso united three provinces
of Tibet in 1642, for first time since mid-ninth
century .
Ngawang Losang Gyatso had a profound influence
on the role that the Kings would play as leaders
of the Tibetan people. He emphasized connection
between the King and Avalokitesvara especially
in his rebuilding of the Potala. The Potala
is named after a mountain in India, “Lord of
the World” which is considered to be the divine
palace of Avalokitesvara. This emphasis helped
establish the notion that the Kings were indeed
incarnations of the Avalokitesvara.
When Ngawang
Losang Gyatso came to power, he established laws,
appointed governors and ministers, and formed an
entire government. He even established a national
dress system of uniforms for officials. He sent
representatives to the border towns of Kham and
areas in central Tibet to reduce heavy taxes, resolve
feuding, establish monasteries, and resettle abandoned
areas. Shakabpa points this out as a demonstration
of Ngawang Losang Gyatso ’s political and religious
leadership.
Another spectacular achievement ofNgawang Losang
Gyatso is the incredible buildings he had constructed.
He founded the great Labrang monastery in Kham and
he built other monasteries dominating hilltops rather
than hidden among mountains and hills as had been
traditionally done. The most outstanding of these
structures is the the Potala Palace which looks
over Lhasa (Snellgrove and Richardson 199).
Ngawang Losang Gyatso also wrote more literature
than all other Kings combined . Such works included
a commentary on the Abhidharmakosa (“Treasury of
Philosophical Notions”), rhetoric and astrology,
a treatise on monastic discipline, guide to Jo-lehang,
a history of Tibet, and a book about the composition
of poetry.

Brocade Yellow Jambhala Thangka

This excellent
Thangka is gathered from a Lama in Xalhu
Monastery,
Tibet, Still in Good Condition! Xalhu
Monastery Located 20 km southeast
of Xigaze, the monastery was built in 1087. In 1329, the
monastery was destroyed by a devastating earthquake. Four
years later, Master Purdain Renqen Zhuba had it rebuilt.
For the reconstruction, many artisans were invited from
the inland area; and they brought with themselves many bricks
and tiles. As a result, the monastery is different from
other monasteries in Tibet in terms of style. The monastery
is symmetrical in structure. The main hall is flanked by
two wing halls. Hall eaves and beams were carved and connected
without using any iron nails. It follows the architectural
style prevalent in inland China. Meanwhile, red stone walls
and closely connected halls feature Tibetan style.
The monastery is known for its four
pieces of treasures:
The first is sutra printing board
composed of 108 pieces of boards used by Master Purdain.
It has a history of more than 600 years. master Purdain
was one of the compilers of Tripitaka: Dangyur;
The second is holy altar cast in
brass. Inside the altar is the purest water changed every
12 years. It is believed that the water can be used to cure
108 diseases and clean 108 kinds of sins;
The third is a stone slab inscribed
with Six Syllable Prayer flanked by four small dagobas.
Legend has it that the stone slab was found when building
the foundation of the monastery;
The fourth is a stone basin from
which the Living Buddha Gyizun Xerab Qoinne and Sapan washed
face.
The monastery is also famous for
its murals, statues of Buddha, sutras and tangka paintings.
