Up for grabs is an old bird's eye maple hybrid 5 string banjo made from an old (1920/1930) tenor pot with 5 string neck. Mp3 clawhammer sound files of this banjo being played are available and will be emailed upon request. The banjo has a nice resonant old time sound and plays easy. It sounds good played with or without the resonator. Here are the specifics:
The 10 3/4" pot and resonator are bird's eye maple. There are 20 original hex lugs, hooks and nuts. Tension hoop and 1/4" steel tonering are original. Neck attachment hardware is original. The tailpiece has Slingerland engraved on it, but looks like and old Waverly type. New Remo head, bridge and strings. The Resonator attaches with 6 screws and is easily removable (See pics). There is some tarnish on the metal parts.
The neck is homemade (maker & age unknown) and needed some repairs and modification. I installed a new fingerboard, frets and mop position dots. The hole for the 5th string peg was in the wrong place and I have no idea why. It was that way when I got it. I filled it and glued on a piece of wood/fingerboard to reattach the 5th peg in the proper position. (See pics) The wood does not match and the glue joints are visible, but everything functions properly, so defect is only cosmetic. The scale is 24 3/4". The neck is straight and the action is 3 mm above the 12th fret. The fingerboard is wide. 1 3/8" at the nut and a full 2" at the end of the fingerboard. Neck wood type is not known, but peghead ears and heelcap look like walnut. The vintage friction tuners may have have come from the original tenor. The 5th peg is a vintage friction type.
Please look at all the pictures and ask any questions as sale will be final. There is no case. Reserve is less than $160.00 Thanks for viewing my auction.
