A Rare Opportunity on eBay!

1887
Griffith M. Hopkins Map
Washington, DC

A Complete Set of Surveys and Plats of the Properties in the City of

Washington
,
District of Columbia
Produced in Philadelphia, 1887

I'm selling my duplicate copies of individual and ORIGINAL Hopkins Map pages from their esteemed 1887 color map of Washington, DC.  I'll be listing 33 Map pages in all, sold by the page (see below for other page numbers). These are the original, hand colored maps that were the first finely detailed maps produced of the city.

I've not seen these on any digitized CD's, and I've also never seen them before on eBay!

They show many, many buildings long gone, many lot owners names from 1887, building addresses, lot sizes and back buildings (carriage houses, fuel sheds, etc), and even many wood frame houses on lots now occupied by Victorian townhouses.

You've no doubt used the tiny, black and white, microfilmed versions with their many flaws, scratch lines, and small print outs, but now you can own the original!  These always bring lots of attention when and wherever I lecture in Washington on house history, and would be especially nice framed on your wall if your house falls on one of the many delineated city squares and blocks.  I bought two incomplete sets at great expense from a Historical Society of Washington sale about ten years ago, and only recently combined them for a complete set for myself.  The 33 pages I'll be listing in auctions over the next two weeks could give you a nearly complete set yourself; only about ten would be missing!

SIZE:  Each of the map pages is double sized, folded in the middle and all measures an impressive 2 feet, seven and-one-half inches wide by  1 foot, ten-and-a-half inches tall.  Condition of all is good; paper is not brittle, but conditions vary on each page (described below).

This Auction: Page (Map) No. 17

Map 17 Bordered By: New Jersey Avenue & 9th Street, I and M Streets, NW

Particular Map 17 Inclusions of Note (1887): This map has the Mount Vernon Park as its complete feature, now the site of the Central Library (City Museum), as well as the old and razed Northern Liberty Market complex (5th and K Streets).  Also includes four city blocks where the Convention Center now stands, and lots and lots of owners names printed on houses, carriage works, etc.

Included Map 17 Squares (or Blocks): (read from upper left to lower right) 401,402,403,425,426,427,449,450,451,w484,452,482,s482,483,484,514,n515,515,516,524,525,526,527,556,558,560.

(Not sure of your Square Number?  Go to https://www.taxpayerservicecenter.com/RP_Search.jsp?search_type=Assessment
and put in your house number and street name in the yellow boxes!)

Included Map 17 Streets (1887 names): 3,4,5,6,7,8,9th Streets, I,K,L,M Streets, Massachusetts Avenue, New Jersey Avenue, New York Avenue, Mount Vernon Park.

Map 17 Particular Condition:  Edges are in very good shape, with a few very minor dings and tears at the two sides.  Very light water stains appears along the bottom and along the top of the map, but its slight, and could be removed with a conservator (these look far worse in my non-flash picture that they do in real life).

Map Pictures:  I've included an overall picture of  this auction map here, along with four pictures of a detailed sections (upper left, lower left, upper right, lower right).  I have a scan of a typical map key (positioned on every map/page in a different place) as well. Sometime my hand and camera appears as a shadow; sorry!

*******************************

Map Key:    I've included a detailed scan of the Hopkins Map Key, which appears on each and every page of the Hopkins Maps (in difference places), along with a north arrow.  It conveys the key to such features as road type (paved, cobblestone, wood, etc), type of building construction (brick, stone, or wood), and sewer lines, horse fountains, lamp boxes, PO boxes, and even ground springs, most of which are covered today.   This map could explain all that ground water in your back yard!

I'll be listing a complete, FULL set of original Hopkins maps in a week or so: 44 maps in all, with index page, sold together as one lot.

Just a few Hopkins maps left from a large, original Lot of 35 maps!

I originally listed the following maps, most of which have been sold for between $99 and $500

Listed 33 original full color map pages from the 1887 Hopkins, including pages:
