3 Red Poppies

Last year we had maybe a dozen flowers on this plant,
this year I have lost count and it is still blooming! This plant was
green all winter even in 2 feet of snow it never died back, which
I found amazing. Every morning these huge glowing red orange
flowers with beautiful purple velvet centers greet me. I couldn’t
wait to paint them. I painted this time with no pre
sketching and with a different attitude. I didn’t work from one
photograph. I worked from the plant itself and then inside from
several photos. I am so pleased with the way it turned out.

It is painted in oil on a piece of primed canvas that is unstretched.
It measures 21”x9.5”. A painting in this form can be handled several
ways, it could be stretched or mounted and then framed. I have
mounted the ones I have kept on foam core and then use the things
they use to hang mirrors to hang them. I like them with no frame. The
pieces that I use to hang them are clear plastic and it makes them feel
that they are floating on the wall.
