Original 1863 Port Royal S.C. Civil War Naval Battle
PORT ROYAL NAVAL BATTLE
Original 1863 engraving "Bombardment of Port Royal", hand colored. This 143 year old engraving features famous naval battle showing Union ships bombarding fort Beauregard on left and fort Walker on right in the Port Royal Harbor Nov. 7, 1861. Very good condition. Overall size 9 1/2" x 6".
PORT ROYAL SOUND (Forts Beauregard and Walker), S.C., Nov. 7, 1861
On Oct. 29 Du Pont left Hampton Roads with 17 wooden cruisers and convoyed a force of about 12,000 under Thomas W. Sherman to Port Royal Sound. After a bombardment on Nov. 7, the Federals took possession of Forts Beauregard and Walker to establish a base for subsequent operations along the coast of S.C., GA, and Fla. Casualties were 31 in Du Pont’s force and 66 in the Confederate forts. (The naval action is known as Hilton Head.)
