Adam Hats stores were popular in the 1940s and this original sign was very likely used to promote the line of hats as a storefront advertising display. The sign reads, Adam (Buy-Word For) Hats, From Coast to Coast, America's Famous Hatter. The words are split between two "layers" -- the bottom-most layer is textured beneath the glass, the top-most layer is on the glass itself. The combination creates a striking, cool effect whether the sign is lit or not. The back of the sign includes a stamp reading, Built by Lacker. (Presumably the same famous sign manufacturer that still exists in Ohio today.) There's also another "stamp" (shown in yellow paint) which is difficult to discern. Material is metal, chrome and glass, including a working power supply for the neon light within. Measures approximately 21"L x 7"H x 2"D, not including the power supply which is about 8"D. Also includes a chain for hanging. The chain itself is pretty rusty. Overall, the sign is in great shape, but could use a thorough cleaning. I've opted to leave it as-is (and not attempt to clean it) because I like the rough, authentic weathering. Good luck bidding! No reserve. |
