Original Nail & Lath from House of Samuel Mudd


This 4 1/4 by 1 1/8 by 1/4 inch wood lath has a rusty nail glued at one end and the printed statement ''Original Lath and Nail Dr. Samuel A. Mudd House Circa 1850''. Mudd was the physician who treated the broken leg of John Wilkes Booth, after the assassination of Lincoln. He was convicted of being part of the conspiracy to kill Lincoln and imprisoned but later released. There are still conflicting opinions about his guilt or innocence.
I saw an identical lath for sale at an auction house with online bidding , and it was accompanied by a letter stating that it was removed from Mudd's house during renovations in 1998. I imagine that the laths and nails were sold for fund raising.  I am starting this listing at a fraction of the amount of the auction estimate for the other lathe!
