What's
a blueprint?:
Before large-scale computer printers existed to output engineering
and architectural drawings, blueprints were used to make copies
of the original designer's drawings to distribute to the carpenters,
set dressers, lighting techs, and all the other craftsmen needed
to make a major film. The original vellum drawing was placed on
a light-sensitive paper and exposed to a bright light, then developed
much like a photographic print, producing a dark blue line on the
paper. This blueprint was one of those original documents used on
the set of the film to insure the sets were constructed accurately
to the designer's vision. Blueprints were made in limited numbers
and would have been tightly controlled and meant only for authorized
personnel. As such, it is very collectible movie memorabilia, similar
to an actual prop or costume...a real piece of the process of making
the film.
Note that this is a real production blueprint, showing how the sets
are actually constructed. It's NOT an aftermarket fantasy print
showing the appearance of the "real" Nostromo. This is
how the Fox sound stage was set up during the filming...the blue
border of the print shows the outer walls of the sound stage.
Where
did I get it?:
Kenner toys, where I worked as a designer for many years, produced
the famous Alien 18" figure, now a rare collectible. But we
looked at a number of different toy ideas as well (an entire action
figure line was proposed as early as 1979), and required research
materials to verify the styling and accuracy of proposed items.
In response to our request, 20th Century Fox provided a collection
of working blueprints just off the set of the movie, which was wrapping
up production at that time.

These prints are VERY difficult to photograph because they are so
large, and the blue lines look faded in a picture. I took a long
shot of the whole thing, then scanned the title block. I can, if
needed, shoot a particular detail of the image.
I had to enhance some of the photos to bring up the details, so
the colors are not accurate. The actual print has blue lines on
a white background.
These
prints have been in my private collection for many years, and have
never been offered for sale before.
All prints are EXCELLENT condition. A few have slight wrinkling
at the very top and bottom edges where they were stood on end while
rolled. This is nearly unnoticeable and does not detract from them
in the slightest. They all have generous borders so could be trimmed
for framing.
It is a true blueprint: completely genuine and original. It has
not been reproduced. If requested, I will include a COA/letter of
provenance on my letterhead outlining the background of this item,
and include my old Kenner business card
