Each Bracelet is 8 inches long (200mm)

Orissa is a region in eastern India where about 87 per cent of the population live in villages. The districts of Phulbani, Mayurbhanj and Kalahandi are mostly rural having a rural population of about 94 per cent on average. Only a small fraction of the people live in towns and cities.

The village folk wear the traditional dress of dhoti and kurta and the women folk sarees. The working people put on shoulder a small piece of cloth called gamuchha, which is used for wiping one's body or tying it around the head as turban when necessary. Lungi is becoming popular with the younger people, but is used only as an informal dress. Boys wear shorts and shirts and girls, vests and frocks. The youth and the urban elites have mostly taken to the European fashion; shalwar and kameej has become a fashion with most urbanite girls.

Oriya, one of the oldest languages in the country having Sanskritic origin, is the predominant language spoken in the state and its outlying tracts. Hindi, Urdu, Bengali and Telugu are also widely understood and sometimes spoken. While Oriya is the official language of the state, English is spoken by the educated few.

Orissa has one of the largest concentrations of tribal population in India, with around 7 million people, about one quarter of the region’s population. Tribal communities differ from all others in many respects, their distinctive features being clan organization, classes, social structure, youth dormitory, colorful rituals and folk art, music and dance. The 62 tribes in Orissa wary in size, degree of acculturation and economic patterns. While the Kondhs numbering nearly a million are numerically the largest in the state, the Santals are among the three largest and advanced tribes in the country. The major tribes living in Orissa are the Santab, Oraons, Gonds and Kondhs. Although many of the Adivasi tribes are found in other parts of the country, the Juangs, Gbhuyans, Saoras, Bondas and Bathudis are exclusive to Orissa. The tribal Communities are in various stages of economic and social development from the least developed Bondas, to the comparatively advanced Santals, the spectrum covering seminomadic to semiurban conditions. While a few tribes like the Lanjia Saoras and Kutia Kodhs are entirely primitive, the Santals have a high degree of acculturation.

According to their origin and habitat they are variously designated as Adimajati (primitive castes), Janajati (folk communities), Girijana (hill folk), Vanajati (forest dwellers), etc. However, these names do not bring out their essential characteristic of primal innocence and spontaneous living. Time seems to have stopped in their sylvan hamlets. Their ways of living with are meager needs of food, shelter and clothing and the life through music and dance seem to have remained unaltered through the ages of social evolution. The sacred God-nature-man relationship that works among them is an amazing experience to the fragmented and alienated mind of modern man.

Most tribal people are basically working people, working to gather food and fuel or engaged in agriculture which is often at a primitive level or maybe in some primitive craft: Their work is usually of subsistence type. The Adivasis have an uncomplicated Adamic approach to life and the basic human virtues.

Tribal art is entirely folk art; it is the concern of every common man and woman in the community and is not made by experts. The traditional architecture of the tiny tribal houses, gable or dome-shaped, has an eye-catching appeal of its own. The houses of the Santal and Ho tribes have their walls decorated in pretty colors and painted with figures of animals, birds and flowers. The doors of the Kondh houses are skillfully carved with traditional figurines. The Saora ikons drawn on their walls are highly appreciated.

Tribal crafts are simple and artistic. The common items of manufacture are baskets, head dresses, textiles, combs, necklaces, bangles, earrings and articles with artistic specialty for use by tribal communities. Tribal art depicts the beauty and simplicity of their life. The continuity of tribal culture through the past, present and future is also maintained through tribal art.

The most fascinating feature of the Adivasis is their social system and its organisation. The traditional Adivasi society with its standard pattern or tribe, sub-tribe and clan is a cohesive unit in which the community spirit is dominant. It is this inter-personal, face-to-face relationship that endows them with a sense of belonging. Tribes have spread out to wide areas with the result that sub-tribes have been formed claiming an independent cultural identity as with the Kutia, Dongria and Desia Kondhs, the Lanjia Saoras of Pultasing and the Sudh Saoras of the coastal districts, the plain Bondas and the hill Bondas. Each of these groups has developed and nurtured its own style of economic activity, social organization and cycles of rites and rituals for separate identity.

The dan is the bigger unit and its number varies from tribe to tribe. The Juangs have as many as 24 clans which have totemic names that are given after objects, trees, and food grains which point to a common ancestry and attitudes of reverence to the ancestors which act as a cultural bond among them. The Saoras, however, have an extended family called birinda descended from a common ancestor, and not a dan system. A Saora woman unlike other women of other tribes continues to belong to her father's family after marriage and not to her husband's dan.

The growing-up socialization process of the Adivasis is extremely interesting, consisting as it does of practices that regulate life in a complex manner. The rites of passage comprising birth, puberty, marriage and death play a very important role in tribal society for which initiation and training are provided carefully. It is these rites that are introduced through youth dormitories. The dormitory is a large hut closed on three sides and open in the front. It is used for training the youth in dancing as well as for holding village councils for discussing and deciding important matters concerning the village or communal welfare.

Along with the headman and the priest, the shaman, and the harospex, who can gaze into the stars and foretell the future, constitute the governing elite of the village. Some tribes have inter village councils, the head of which is the headman of the most important village usually a respectable person of age and experience.. This council deals with inter village disputes and other matters pertaining to the village as an entity, not individuals. In most matters the decisions are accepted and implemented successfully. But this system is now under stress owing to the introduction of the modern Panchayat system often disturbing and dislocating the ancient ways of life.
