About This Auction
This auction is for a pair of book ends carved from multi-colored Orthoceras/Ammonite fossil laden stone. Striking colors of dark gray, reddish purple and some splashes of golden yellow with white/clear quartz/quartzite fossils. They stand 6 inches tall, are 4 inches wide and 2 iches thick. Hand crafted by skilled local artisans in Morocco. Made from colorful stone mined from the world famous Atlas Mountain fossil deposits located in Southern Morocco at the northern edge of the mighty Sahara Desert. One bookend sports a 3 dimensional Ammonite shell, the other a 3-D Orthoceras shell. All sides are polished to a high sheen except the back and bottoms. Orthoceras was a type of marine cephalopod that is related to modern day nautiloids. Their fossil forms look like rockets! Ammonites are an extinct cephalopods that lived as predatory marine mollusks. They were related to modern squids and octopi. Interesting paleontological bookends.
