Once-buried Ortiz Red Sox jersey
Removed from the new Yankee Stadium
on April 12, 2008
Take home this piece of Boston Red Sox history while supporting the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute!
The rivalry between the Red Sox and the New York Yankees is one of the longest and the most dramatic in professional sports. The latest chapter was written when a construction worker—a diehard Red Sox fan—secretly buried a David Ortiz jersey in the concrete of the new Yankee Stadium in hopes of "cursing" the new ballpark.
Rumors of the worker’s activity were verified, and the jersey was located under two feet of concrete. Following the discovery, Yankees President Randy Levine indicated that the shirt would be given to the Jimmy Fund to be auctioned off, a move that proves that when it comes to cancer, everyone is on the same team.
The winning bidder will receive the one-of-a-kind jersey while attending a Red Sox game at Fenway Park. (Date TBD)
Auction Package Details:
- #34 David Ortiz jersey buried and extracted from under the new Yankee Stadium on April 12, 2008. It still has some of the cement still on it! Certificate of Authenticity included.
- The winner will attend a 2008 Red Sox home game with a guest and be presented with the jersey at that time (date TBD).
- New, authentic David Ortiz road jersey. "Boston" embroidered on front, "34" and "Ortiz" on the back. This jersey has the Major League Baseball symbol on the back. It is a 100% polyester doubleknit, size XL.
- New York Yankees Universe size XL t-shirt in navy with white text on front
- Amounts in excess of $715 are tax deductible.
Official Rules and Restrictions:

- The Jersey will be displayed at the New England Sports Museum starting Friday, April 18th. The winner will attend a 2008 Red Sox home game with a guest and be presented with the Jersey at that time (date TBD) and should contact the Jimmy Fund to make arrangements.
- If the winning bidder is unable to take possession of the Jersey at the scheduled time, DFCI will mail the 2 Jerseys to the winner via UPS on a mutually agreed upon date.
- The FMV listed above is not negotiable and will be used for tax purposes. Income and other taxes, if any, are the sole responsibility of the winner.
- Prize package and its individual components (e.g. the Jersey) are not available for resale for at least one year following the closing date of the auction. The winning bidder will be asked to sign a Certificate of Intent to indicate his/her acceptance of this notion. Prize package is non-extendible, non-negotiable, non-refundable, non-transferable, and not redeemable for cash or replaceable if lost or stolen.
- Transportation, lodging, meals and gratuities are not included in the prize package.
- If the winning bidder cannot be contacted using his/her information submission or does not respond to the notification within ten (10) business days of the notification, or the prize notification is returned or undeliverable, that winning bidder will forfeit all rights to any prize, and an alternate winner will be selected on Thursday, May 8, 2008 at 1:00pm.
- Participants agree to abide by all terms of the Official Rules and the decisions of DFCI, made in its sole discretion, which shall be final. DFCI is not responsible for lost or stolen prizes, incorrect or inaccurate transcription of entry information, for any human error, technical malfunctions, lost/delayed data transmission, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, theft or destruction or unauthorized access to, or alteration of, responses, for line failures or other failures of any telephone network, server, providers, computer equipment, software or any combination thereof, for inability to access any web site or online service or any other error or malfunction, or for late, lost, illegible, misdirected or incomplete responses which may limit a participant’s ability to participate in the drawing. FAQ's
- I live out of state and am not able to attend a game at Fenway Park:
- Can I send someone in my place?
- Yes, the Jimmy Fund would be happy to work with the winner to allow someone to attend in his/her place. The auction winner will, however, remain liable for his/her guests at Fenway.
- Will the Jimmy Fund fly me in?
- Unfortunately, the Jimmy Fund is unable to provide transportation to/from Fenway Park.
- Can you send me the jersey next week?
- As stated in the auction listing, the winner agrees to allow the New England Sports Museum to display the jersey following the auction. If the winner is not able to attend the game (date TBD), the Jimmy Fund will UPS the jersey to the winner on a mutually agreed upon date.
- I’m not interested in the tickets to the game (date TBD):
- Can I receive a larger tax deduction?
- Regardless of which items within the package the winner would like to receive, he/she is responsible for the entire package, we are unable to break down the package for tax purposes.
- Can I sell/raffle/or auction these tickets?
- No. Tickets may be transferred to family and friends with written consent from the Jimmy Fund, but under no circumstances may you sell, raffle, or auction these tickets. If you would like to donate the tickets back to the Jimmy Fund, we would be happy to extend the offer to a patient here at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
