P-47 Thunderbolt fighters pack the flight deck of the United States Navy Aircraft Carrier USS Casablanca while enroute to Guam July 16th, 1945.
USS Casablanca was named after the port city of French Morocco which served as the major base for American campaigns in North Africa during World War II. Originally designated as AVG-55 Casablanca was to be named USS Ameer. The Casablanca would be redesignated ACV-55 on August 20th, 1942, and was renamed Alazon Bay on January 23rd, 1943. She finally became the Casablanca on April 3rd, 1943 two days before she was launched.
This was not the end of name and designation changes for the Casablanca. Officially commissioned on July 8th, 1943 she was redesignated CVE-55 seven days later. The Casablanca was decommissioned on June 10th, 1946.
