Quality Grades
The most important factor to determine the quality and price of a hat is by looking at the fineness of the weave. If you look closely at a hat you can appreciate how finely the hat is woven by determining how thin are the straws.
Every time the weave quality is doubled, the amount of work is multiplied by four so the finely woven hats demand more time and cost more.
Quality meassures such as Grade numbers are not a good way of grading finess since a Grade 3 form one provider can be better than a Grade 9 from another one. Same situation occurs with denominations such as Fino, Fino Fino, Super Fino, Ultra Fino, etc. I meassure my hats quality with the only objective way to do it, which is using the Montecristi Cuenta System that counts the number of weaves in a square inch.
This hat is a musuem quality hat that has aproximately 1200 weaves per square inch. Almost ten times as much as a standard hat.

History
The Genuine Panama Hat is actually manufactured in Ecuador and the toquilla straw, which is made of grows only in the Ecuadorian coastal lowlands. Panama Hats took this name after they where commercialized in Panama during the construction of the Canal in the beginning of the last century.
Ever since the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, Ecuadorian artisans from in an around Montecristi have been weaving hats. The Panama Hat originates from the Toquilla Palm Leaf that grows only in the ecuadorian coastal lowlands. The palms are shredded into fiber straws, woven by hand, shaped, beached, sun dried and trimmed into what is perhaps the finest hat made in the world.
