PATEK PHILIPPE VINTAGE CALATRAVA 2508 STAINLESS STEEL 1957
OVERSIZED SCREWED BACK ORIGINAL CASE

Here is a riddle for you: When is an ounce of stainless steel worth more than an once of gold? Answer: when it is in a vintage Patek Philippe watch case. This watch is an amazingly collectable vintage Patek Philippe reference 2508 Calatrava in stainless steel, and is original in every way right down to the case condition. When we first saw this watch, we had to look once, twice and then a third time to make sure our eyes weren't deceiving us.

Original stainless steel case measures 35mm diameter by 11.8mm thick. Crystal is domed acrylic. Extra large original winding crown. The reference 2508 is notable for being a large watch for the 1950s in both diameter and thickness. In fact, the screw down case back was one of Patek's early attempts at a highly water/humidity/dirt intrusion free case. Toward that end, there is a second movement cover underneath the massive screw down case back.

The case does have some light marks on it, but much more important is that the case features its original finish. We believe this watch case has never been polished. The edges maintain their original sharp edges and factory finish.

Original movement is the manual winding Caliber 27-SC with 18 jewels, adjusted in 5 positions and for temperature and isochronism and stamped with the Geneva Seal. The movement is running strong.

Original dial is beautiful! It is an original and untouched beauty - silver with a wonderful champagne color patina which is set off perfectly by the applied steel hour markers, GORGEOUS original steel dauphine hands and original blackened sweep seconds hand. The dial also has a "pie pan" design, meaning the outermost edge of the dial slopes downward from the main dial surface. This adds a very pleasing depth to the dial.

Strap is black Patek crocodile with steel Patek tang clasp.

Watch is accompanied by the Extract from the Archives showing a production year of 1957 and an original retail sales date of October 17, 1958.

This is a really, really nice 100% original vintage Patek. Here is a summary of its highlights:

  • Rare, rare stainless steel case
  • Original dauphine hands
  • Screw down case back
  • Sweep seconds
