Born on August 10th, 1948 in New York, Patti Austin is legendary on the soul scene.
A professional singer since the age of five, Patti was a protegee of Dinah Washington and Sammy Davis Jnr. A 1969 single for United Artists Records titled "Family Tree" cracked the R&B Top 50. Patti cut her debut album End Of A Rainbow for Creed Taylor's CTI label in 1976, followed by Havana Candy in 1977 and Body Language in 1980.
Austin dueted with George Benson on "Moody's Mood For Love" in 1980. She sang backgrounds for sessions by Noel Pointer, Ralph MacDonald, Angela Bofill and Roberta Flack.
Patti came closest on this late 70's live album (recorded at the Bottom Line Night Club) to transferring onto tape the qualities that made her an outstanding vocalist outside of the studio. There's more spontaneity, emotion, and charisma in the vocals on this album than almost all her studio recordings combined; perhaps the nightclub inspired her or more likely, Patti was free to sing without any agendas, marketing strategies, or producers visions being factored into the process.
