Anonymous 1870-80's albumen photograph of a back street of Peking, China. There are a couple caucasian men coming out of an alley on the left. Leaning up against the building on the right is a merchant selling melons. I can't tell what kind of melons but they appear to be have ribs, and a knobby surface. It looks like he has a couple slices for samples. In the middle ground is a jumble of wood that looks like a cart accident. Way off in the distance I can read a sign on a building that reads Smiths Co. Penciled on the verso is "Pekin People" & "819". I'm assuming the number is a catalog or negative number for this photographer. This 10.75" x 8.25" (27.30 x 20.95 cm) photograph is unmounted, which is why you see those wrinkles in the scan. Good tones and detail.
