Album notes
The follow-up to Pernice Brothers' lauded YOURS, MINE AND OURS, 2005's DISCOVER A LOVELIER YOU finds the Massachusetts-via-New York indie-pop band reining in the rock elements of the earlier album for a lighter, even more melodic sound. As always, Joe Pernice's wry, literate, and often-morbid lyrics ("There's a train wreck picking up survivors from a plane crash") contrast wonderfully with his amiable vocals and breezy, harmony-laden arrangements. Although the driving "Snow" visits Psychedelic Furs territory, Pernice's love of 1980s New Wave bands is largely subdued here, in favor of shimmering pop tunes like "Say Goodnight to the Lady" and "Amazing Glow." The instrumental title track--a lush song with chiming guitars that recalls the UK cult band Felt--holds it own with the rest of the disc, and provides an excellent mid-album interlude. Longtime fans of Pernice's projects (including Scud Mountain Boys and Chappaquiddick Skyline) won't be surprised by the high quality of the songs on DISCOVER A LOVELIER YOU, a record that should bring Pernice Brothers an even wider audience.
