Truth is often stranger than fiction. The idea of making a film out of Phar Lap originally started through war cries of Zulu warriors about to charge Welsh fusiliers at Rorke's Drift in South Africa in the 19th century.
In 1980, producer John Sexton and his father were watching the film Zulu - as the roar of the charging warriors swelled - Sexton senior remarked 'That reminds me of the day that Phar Lap won the Melbourne Cup. The crowd roared like that when the big red chestnut hit the front' Sexton senior then went on to recall the event and the elements of a might film emerged.
It was a great yarn, set in The Depression with sentiment, courage, romance, excitement, death threats and world acclaim. It was the story of a mighty champion and a controversial career. The film itself starred Ron Leibman, Tom Burlinson, Martin Vaughan, Judy Morris, Celia DeBurgh and Towering Inferno (all of whom are pictured).
