PILGRIM AMETHYST PURPLE CRACKLE GLASS VASE w/ APPLIED RIGAREE NECKBAND & "STRAWBERRY" PONTIL MARK ~ PRE 1960s

This auction is for a gorgeous dark amethyst purple crackle glass hand blown ruffled vase with a lovely applied same color rigaree neckband, that was created by the PILGRIM GLASS CO. of Ceredo, West Virginia. I believe this dates pre-1960's due to the matching colored neckband. After that time, Pilgrim introduced crystal decorations and handles. The matching rigaree neckbands are a higher preference for collectors, as they are harder to come across. Since this company no longer exists, closing in 2000, their items are highly collectible, never to be produced again. The color is rare and outstanding and sports tons of tiny crackle & sparkle in the sunlight. The top has a randomly pinched or ruffled top edge and the base of the vase has a partial "strawberry" pontil mark on the bottom. This mark was created when the glass blower tapped the bottom of the still hot pontil mark, with a metal file so as to flatten any sharp edges, therefore, leaving a funny mark that sometimes resembles the skin of a strawberry....hence, the strawberry pontil mark that collectors just love to find! Not all Pilgrim pieces have this mark, so finding one is a real treat. Pilgrim is said to have been the only company that used this technique, therefore, positive identification is easy when these are found. The height of this vase is about 6" tall and the width is 3" through the belly....perfect window sill size! It is in excellent condition with no chips, unwanted cracks or residue. This is a very hard color to get hold of and does not come around often. For those of you who do not know, amethyst crackle glass is said to be rare and ranks third in rarity, behind cobalt and smoke gray. Knowing that, it is a highly desireable color for collectors and due to that, it will always demand a higher value and price on the collectors' market........ Great color, great style, great item for your collection!!!!
