PLATO PUTORANO CABOCHON LIKE MESOSIDERITE METEORITE

This cabochon is made of a most unusual and rare Plato Putorano native iron. Absolutely amazing specimen! Extremely rare on Earth! Structure and chemistry close to mesosiderite meteorite.

Descroption: The first sample of this iron was found in August 1984 during geological research in the South/eastern region of the Putorano Plato, Russia. The climate in this region is extremely cold: temperature never exceeds 0 degrees Celsius. It is a permafrost. The iron pieces have been discovered on the bank of river in the eroded Paleoeffusive deposits of Triassic age. They can be either remains of lava or meteorites. It is impossible to exactly identify what it is. A test at an American laboratory showed that it is likely a terrestrial iron, however it can be remains of the Tungus meteorite as well. The Putorano Plato is located near Taymyr; the nearest city is Norilsk located in 700 km from the location of discovery. Native Iron is quite often a misnomer as natural iron is not necessarily "native" to Earth since it rarely occurs on the Earth's surface by terrestrial processes. It is mostly found in the form of meteorites that have impacted the Earth's surface. A few rare terrestrial gabbros and sulfide deposits do contain elemental iron-nickel deposits, these are the only truly native iron/nickel.
All natural iron, whether it is native or meteoritic, is actually an alloy of iron and nickel. The two elements are combined in varying percentages from less than 6% nickel to as much as 75% nickel, although iron is by far more common than nickel. Terrestrial Iron/nickel is very rare. Meteorites are also rare, but are far more common than terrestrial Iron/nickel. Because there is an abundance of iron and nickel compounds, Iron/nickel is not used as an ore of either iron or nickel. Iron/nickel, whether terrestrial or meteoritic, is valued as a rare mineral collectors item. Some meteorites are polished to display etched crystal faces, known as Widmanstaetten lines.
Meteorites are used in scientific studies, such as to find meteorite origins, signs of life in outer space, and extraterrestrial matter. Notable Occurrences. For terrestrial iron, good specimens can only be found in the Kola Peninsula, Russia; Disco Island, Greenland; Kassel, Germany and New Zealand. Chemical analysis: Containing rock consists of plagioclase (labradorite, bytownite) and monoclinic pyroxene. Iron quantity varies from 45% to 90% of the total mass. Spectral analysis shows presence of the following elements: Fe > 94% Ni 0.44 : 3.81% Co 0.17 : 0.63% Cu 0.19 : 0.9% Rare elements: Pt 0.015 : 4.97 g/t Pd 0.25 : 7.92 g/t Au 0.003 : 1.68 g/t Ag 0.05 : 1.65 g/t
The short geographical note: "Area is 767.6 thousand sq. km Population : 26.000 people Administrative center : Tura Settlement The district is situated in the north of Krasnoyarsky Krai. In the south and south/east it has a border with Irkutsk Oblast, in the north : with the Taimyr Autonomous District, in the east : with Sakha (Yakut) Republic. Primarily, the district's territory is mountainous and wood in the northern part, with enormous parts of mountainous desert (tundra) in the north-west of the plain Putorano. Evenkia's climate is very continental. The minimum temperature in winter achieves minus 60 'C, in summer it often exceeds +20 'C. A number of precipitation  350 / 400 mm per year. The district is situated in the zone of constant frost. The main rivers are the Lower and Podkamennaya Tunguska : the tributaries of the Yenisei. There are many large and little lakes in the district. The important natural resources of Evenkia are: pine:needle forests, hunting places and deer's pasture's, oil, gas, coal, graphite, iceland shpatum and other minerals. The deer's pastures allow to keep up to 30 thousand of home deer, those are ones of the main sources of aborigines' existence. Also on the district's territory there is the largest population of wild rein deer. The beautiful hunting places allow to hunt up to 30 thousand of sables per year. In the "taiga" there are also musk-rat, squirrel, stoat, wood-grouse, partridge and other game, hunting objects are wolf, elk, bear. Only furs and the rein deer's horns are delivered on world market, the rest of the resources are used by the district population inside. Although the wood reserves are more than 5 billion cubic m, they are developed in small volume because of a lack of the transport ways and a great natural sensibility. Because of these reasons, the natural resources are extracted in small volume. Graphite, coal, iceland shpatum are extracted now. The oil and gas deposits are discovered : about I billion tons. Diamonds, gold, iron ore, apatities and other natural resources are noticed. Info from Ataxite Ebay site..
