(Sample Introduction section)

THE POCHER BUGATTI KITS

Pocher produced three Bugatti kits:  The K76 50T (yellow/black), the K86 Surprofilé (red/black), and the very rare K84 Coupe de Ville (blue/silver).  Besides the color and body style, all three are very similar.  They share the same engine, chassis, wheels, hood, doors, wheel fenders, floor, seats, windows, window frames, and dashboard.  The K76 has the most external body fittings.  The K84 does not have the front center headlight and horns, but has a unique front grill.  The K86 has a different main body, but does not have the center headlight, horns, front bumper, or spare tires.  The photos of all 3 Bugatti kits, their parts photos, and the assembly manual scans are all included on the DVD-ROM.

Pocher also produced a KM76 Bugatti Engine kit.  The Bugatti Engine kit basically consists of a subset of parts from the full kit.  The unique parts added are a special name plate, and the 4 threaded rods as engine stands.  Unfortunately, the engine kit does not include the chrome water pipe on top, the exhaust manifolds, or the shift lever.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR THE COLLECTORS

The very early production K76 kits contain metal differential gears inside the rear gearbox.  These are the kits that come in a plain white box with a side view of the car.  Only some of the very early kits with this box have the gears, not all of them (Some kits come with assembly manuals that shows the gear assembly, but no such parts in the kit, very disappointing).  This assembly involves about 40 parts.  All of these parts are hidden inside the rear gearbox and would not be seen again after assembly.  With these parts, turning the front hand crank would turn the drive shaft, the gears, even ultimately, move the rear wheels.  These are high quality machined and cast metal gears and shafts.  Unfortunately, all these parts were deleted soon after production.  These kits are valued higher to collectors, but would make almost no difference if you are building the kit, unless you are doing a “cut away” differential case.

The assembly drawings and photos of these gears have been included on this DVD-ROM.  They are organized in a separate file under "Deleted differential gears".  These are high resolution scans that you can magnify to very large size and still see the details.

Between the K76 and K86, some sprues/trees may appear to be identical, but they are not.  For example, the clear tree on the K86 (and later K76) has the smaller rear windows molded next to the windshield, but the early production K76 clear tree does not.  Same is true with the chromed plastic tree, which may contain additional parts for the K86.  These parts are not found on the early production K76 chrome tree.  Therefore, the same sprue may not be interchangeable unless they have been carefully checked to be the same.

BUILDING THE POCHER BUGATTI WITH THIS DVD-ROM

This revised DVD-ROM is a very detailed and specific document on the proper assembly of the Pocher Bugatti.  It will cover both the K86 and K76/K84 body styles.  The purpose of this DVD-ROM is to assist you in the successful completion of your Pocher Bugatti, instead of having a partially build kit that is abandoned.  This DVD-ROM will help you avoid frustrations and breaking parts, so that your building experience will be an enjoyable one.  The methods described are simple enough that it would be possible for just about any modeler to complete a Pocher kit.

The Pocher Bugatti assembly manual can be quite confusing.  Each drawing shows many parts but does not explain the sequence of assembly.  The sequence of all the drawings is also NOT the best sequence of building the model.  Some parts shown cannot be assembled until after later steps have been completed first.  Some parts are only drawn once although there are multiples of them or they need to be repeated for the other side.  Some drawings show screws and parts that don't assemble to anything.  Some drawings show parts to be installed already in place.  Many parts end in reference numbers instead of showing what they are attached to.  There are also a few mistakes in the assembly manual.  This DVD will clarify all this.  The objectives of this supplemental instruction are as follow:

  • Assist you in the proper assembly of the model in a step-by-step manner from start to finish, with only minor emphasis on customization.
  • Show you the best and most logical sequence of assembly to minimize difficulty and avoid dead corners or blocked screw holes.
  • Alert you at every step where assembly mistakes are likely to occur.
  • Alert you to all the parts that look identical/symmetrical but are NOT.
  • Provide you with useful building tips at every step of the way.
  • Alert you to all steps where parts are likely to BREAK.
  • Show you where parts have poor fit and the best way to fix them.
  • Alert you to all the mistakes in the assembly manual.
  • Clarify drawings that may be confusing.
  • Show you how to properly install all the upholstery pieces.
  • Provide advice on painting.

THE PHOTO COLLECTION ON THIS DVD-ROM

This latest updated version now has over 1,500 assembly photos that clearly show every step and every sub-assembly.  The photos are arranged to show the best and most logical sequence of assembly.  All building tips have been added onto the photos so the problems and explanations are clearly illustrated.  In addition to the assembly photos, this DVD-ROM also contains the following:

  • Over 200 parts photos of the K76 (both old and new versions), K84, and K86 to help you inventory your kit.
  • Over 200 photos of the finished K76 and K86 Bugatti.
  • Over 200 reference photos.  Since reference photos of the Bugatti 50T are very rare, other reference photos of older Bugatti Type 49 and Type 57 are also included.

Most reference photos are from the internet so they are available to anyone. I have included them on this DVD only to save you the time searching for them and not for any other reason.  All photos are full screen jpg files.

BONUS VINTAGE MAGAZINE ARTICLE

This DVD also includes scanned imaged of a magazine article about the real Bugatti 50T.   It was found in a magazine out of the 60’s.  This is a very high quality scan that can be enlarged many time on your computer screen, and still allow you to read the article clearly.

THE POCHER PARTS IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM

Pocher parts are identified by 3 sets of numbers/symbols.  The first 5 digit is the part number, the next 2 or 3 digit is the bag number or tree/sprue number, the last letter tells you the color or type of material the part is made of.

Pocher are known for “borrowing” parts from their other kits.  The first 2 digit of the part number tells you the original kit this part came from.  For example, door hinge 75025-626-K originally came from the K75 Rolls Royce, damper plates 71011-605-K originally came from the K71 Alfa, and the K86 tail light lens 73585 is borrowed over from the K73 Spider.  However, the K86 fuel pipe 86101-647-K is a new part first introduced in the K86 kit.  This information will be helpful incase missing parts need to be located.

Between the different Bugatti kits, sometimes identical metal parts may have different bag numbers.  These parts will have the same first 5-digit number, but a DIFFERENT bag number. For example, wheel center cap is 76002-627-K in the K76 kit, but it is 76002-642-K in the K86 kit.  As long as the part has the same first 5 digits, it is the same part.  For example, the front pulley bracket on the K76 is molded in black, so it is 76676-24-N; the same part is molded in red on the K86, so it is 76676-24-R.

INVENTORY YOUR KIT

Unfortunately, the quality control of Pocher is less than desirable.  Some kits have missing parts, defective parts, or wrong parts EVEN WHEN FACTORY SEALED (i.e. two left fenders instead of left/right).  Check through your kit as best as you can to make sure it has no missing or wrong parts.  Photo of all parts have been included on this DVD-ROM to help you inventory your kit.  Check through each metal parts bag and inventory each bag against the parts list printed on the cardboard.  This DVD-ROM also contains parts inventory lists of both the K76/K84 and the K86 kits.  Print this list out and use it to check through your kit.
