Morgan dollars from the Carson City mint are eagerly sought after by many collectors and enthusiasts. This 1889-CC Morgan dollar is one of the few key dates in the Morgan dollar series along with the 1893-S and the 1895 Proof-only issues, and remains extremely rare especially in the upper Mint State and Proof only levels respectively. Among the Carson City issue it is far and away the most elusive Morgan dollar from this mint and in comparison to the demand for them, examples are rare in all grades. Most coins from the 1889 Carson City mint according to Q. David Bowers are "Average strike at best, often times below average". He further states that "The luster varies from rather shallow and satin-like frosty, but not deeply frosty". Over the years the 1889-CC dollar has seen a steady increase in its value as more collectors, investors, and enthusiasts were looking to complete their sets. According to most numismatic dealers, and collectors the optimal collectable grade is at the MS63 level. At both the NGC & PCGS grading services there are only 125 listed certified coins at this MS63 level. The original mintage was 350,000 dollars and all those dollars were struck in the last quarter of that year. After laying dormant four years most Carson City were released into circulation shortly afterwards. Thus many survivors are worn extensively. It is also noted that between 250,000 - 325,000 1889-CC Morgan dollars were melted down during the early 1900's under the "Pittman Act of 1918. A few rolls of the 1889-CC dollars were released in the 1930's and again later on in the 1950's according to Treasury records. When the government's GSA sales became reality in the 1960's collectors were optimistic that the dollars from the Carson City mint would be more available to them. After the U.S. Treasury completed their entire release of Morgan dollars only one emerged from the vaults and this is confirmed by all the Treasury records from the GSA sales. The lone 1889-CC still resides in the original GSA holder and is certified MS62 DPL NGC and it can be verified on NGC's web site. That single coin helped to establish this date and mint as a rare and elusive date from then on. *** The overall surfaces of this piece are remarkable clean. The above average strike and original luster is what grabs and keeps your attention. The hair above Liberty's ear are well detailed and deeply struck. The ear, nose, eye, jaw, cheek, neck are void of any distractions to these focal points. The curls are full and the cheek is round and smooth and clean. The original luster is deep and displays full cartwheels at any angle on both sides of the coin. The rims are clean and the denticles are full and crisp. Eye appeal is exceptional on both sides. All devices on both sides are fully struck. On the reverse all the lettering and stars are void of contact marks or nicks. The arrowheads and the eagle's talon are clean and nicely etched. All the eagle's breast feathers and wings are frosty and nicely separated. This coin also has at least one VAM marking. On the reverse along the lower left hand side and all the way up to the top of the coin. (VAM-5A) The diagnostic crack running through the word "ONE" and up through the word(s) "UNITED STATES' and into the word "OF". All original and problem free this Choice Uncirculated 1889-CC Morgan dollar has it all. Pop: 54 with 46 coins graded higher. This Morgan dollar is one a few "Top Tier Coins" within the MS63 certified grade level. If you were searching for one of the best here it is. There is a modest reserve. Payment arrangements with or without layaway option may be requested. For more information please ask. Thank you-
