This is a reproduction of an original piece from the San Agustin culture, which flourished between 600 BC-1000 AD in what is today the area of Huila in the southwest of Colombia. San Agustin was a center of ceremonies, and is famous for its large statues made from carved volcanic rock. This piece is a 'cantaro', or a large vessel used to store water. The rounded bottom indicates it was probably buried, to keep its contents cool, and would tip easily to fill smaller jugs. The ceramics from the San Agustin zone are ceremonial in use, and the majority are black. Painted pieces have been found as recently as 10 years ago.
Little is known about these cultures that occupied the area in and near Colombia. The San Agustin group were excellent goldsmiths and ceramists, and one of the few groups to leave the large stone pieces that survive to tell an ancient story. Because of the abundance of gold in the area, once the Spaniards arrived, whole groups were wiped out to loot the treasures. The legend of El Dorado fueled more and more exploration. Even today, burial grounds can be discovered and pillaged, leaving little to study. Ceramics that remain today are from tombs, and are ceremonial in their use, representing rituals and events in their lives. Governments have now made international trade of these original pieces illegal.
As we piece together bits left behind, we can begin to see cultures that were quite amazing, and begin to see how our world is not as large as we often believe. These pieces are an homage to those cultures. They are faithfully reproduced from originals, hand crafted with care. This piece is quite large, and has been reproduced in a resin material, identical to ceramic, but lighter weight and unbreakable, making shipping virtually risk free. This bit of history can be a perfect addition to your home or garden. Each individual item comes with an enclosure card that gives a brief description of its use and the cultural group that created it.
