| This is a reproduction of an original piece from the Sinu culture, which flourished between 400-1600 AD in the tropical plains of the Caribbean in the north of Colombia. The Sinu had been expanding in an area around the basins of the rivers Sinú, San Jorge, Cauca and Nechi. At their peak their territory was divided into three provinces with complementary economic functions: production of edible tubers, various manufactures and the exploitation of native gold. Their chiefs, all members of a single lineage, controlled the large-scale distribution of products. This piece reminds us of these ancient chieftains that were in power in these extense matriarchal societies. Great importance was placed on women and motherhood, and often their leaders are depicted with their children accompanying them, their role as nurturers a complement to their important leadership positions.
Little is known about these cultures that occupied the area in and near Colombia. The Sinu were excellent goldsmiths, specializing in delicate filigree, and ceramists, the pieces that have survived are of extraordinary beauty. Because of the abundance of gold in the area, once the Conquitadores arrived, whole groups were wiped out to loot the treasures. The legend of El Dorado fueled more and more exploration. Even today, burial grounds can be discovered and pillaged, leaving little to study. Ceramics that remain today are from tombs, and are ceremonial in their use, representing rituals and events in their lives. Governments have now made international trade of these original pieces illegal.
As we piece together bits left behind, we can begin to see cultures that were quite amazing, and begin to see how our world is not as large as we often believe. These pieces pay homage to those cultures. They are faithfully reproduced from originals, hand crafted by applying the same techniques and the same natural materials used by ancient potters in its elaboration and decoration. Each item comes with a card giving a brief description of the piece and the group that produced it.
A timeless and distinctive tribute to mothers.......
