One Pound Chef's Pak of Gourmet Fresh Premium Grade Black Peppercorns from Tellicherry, India
Not all pepper is the same. Our pepper is imported direct from Tellicherry, the largest and most famous pepper growing region of India. These are not any peppers. There are several grades of pepper:
- Premium
- Select large
- Select
- Standard
The last grade, Standard, is what you usually find in supermarket pepper, your pepper shaker, or those little packets of pepper you get at fast food outlets. It is the cheapest.
The best grade, premium is double the price of Select and Large and is purchased by fine upscale resturants and sold in gourmet food stores.
This auction is for 1 pound of Premium Select Black Tellicherry Pepper. And our pepper is FRESH. It is not shipped on a slow frieghter and stored in warehouses for months like most pepper that is 4 to 6 months old when it gets to your store.
Our supplier ships by fast container ship in small quantities frequently. It arrives in the US about 22 days after it is picked. It will stay fresh as the first day for up to 6 months --but once you taste it, it will not last that long.
Tellicherry black peppercorns grown in the Tellicherry Region of India are the very best. They are the largest, darkest, the most pungent and the most flavorful. The Premium grade is the most consistent in quality.
You will be amazed by the aroma when you open the bag for the first time. Once open we suggest you store in a sealed canister or a ziplok bag in a cool dark place to maintain the freshness.
Put it in your favorite pepper mill. When you make your first grind you will be met with an explosion of falvor and aroma that forever hook you on permium pepper.
Tellicherry is an old port town in Kerala and it was a major export hub for British East Indian Company to trade spices from South India. For centuries, europeans enjoyed the flavor of Tellicherry pepper in their gourmet meals.
What exactly is Tellicherry pepper? By definition, it is 10% of the largest and ripest of the peppercorn harvest from Malabar region.
What makes Tellicherry pepper so special?
The tropical heat, monsoon rains, and iron-rich laterite soil creates the best growing environment for the pepper. Better location to receive extra sunlight, location of the fruit on the vine to get better nutrient and time a fruit gets to mature before harvest etc contributes to make bigger, better pepper. And chefs across the globe swear by its rich aromatic oil and flavor when they grind Tellicherry pepper into their platter.
