This is an amazing piece of primitive folk art created by a prisoner in Lauderdale county jail in Florence, Alabama in the 1930's. This is a large model of a tall ship that has four masts. It is all hand crafted from match sticks and other materials. The hull and deck area as well as the base are constructed completely out of matchsticks. The masts are wooden dowels with cotton twine riggings and muslin sails. The overall size is 36 inches long, 27-1/2 high and 5-1/2 inches wide. It is in very good condition and has no damage.
I have been told that this type of ship is a carrack, the same type of ship as the Santa Maria. It is a 15th century Mediterranean design that had the stability for long distance ocean travel.
Please contact us with any questions and we will answer to the best of our ability. We will be happy to provide additional photos upon request. Stated shipping cost is for the US. We recommend insurance for this item as we are not responsible for any damage in transit.
I think this prisoner's sentence must have been for more than 30 days!!!
