This auction is for a primitive tribal carving, made from a shoulder blade of an animal (probably an ox, cow, or water buffalo.) The scapula has a bird carved on it, and it is capped with a seperate piece of bone with a man's head carved on top. This unusual and unique artwork measures 15 inches long and 7 inches wide. Winner receives the exact item shown, not a copy. Already imported, ships from U.S. Please scroll down for more pictures.
This is a wonderfully primitive and tribal looking piece of art, and it is absolutely authentic and unique. I bought it from a small booth in the central market of Denpasar, Bali, from a vendor who dealt mostly in carved and decorated bones. I got the impression that the vendor was from an outlying island, possibly Guinea, Timor, or Irian Jaya. (You know, one of the more primitive areas.) Anyway, it was so unique, I had to buy it! I dare you to find a piece even remotely like this in a retail store!
The vendor spoke no English, so I don't know what animal the bone came from. But it is quite large, so I'm thinking maybe it's from an ox or a water buffalo. The bone has been carved with a bird design, and a border of small circles. It has been stained to a dark brown. There is a seperate bone section attached on top with a man's head carved on it, and a loop of string tied around it for hanging.
