High Efficiency Pulse Start Metal Halide Prismatic Refractor Light

Get More Light with Fewer Fixtures and Less Energy!

Pulse Start bulbs make 35% to 52% more light than their conventional metal halide counterparts. State of the Art Prismatic Refractors deliver an extra 22+% light. You get a total of 60% to 85% more light using 5 less watts! Details on both of these technologies described later!

Save $$Thousands$$ on Energy!

Our fixture replaces 1.6 standard start metal halide low bay fixtures, but uses 282 less watts to do it! Over the 20,000 life of a pulse start bulb, that’s a $565 energy savings per pulse start prismatic fixture!($.10/Kwhr assumed)

Patented Prism Provides Even, Shadow Free Lighting with Outstanding Optical Efficiency!

It delivers “3-D” illumination on both vertical and horizontal surfaces. The prism bends light down to permit wide fixture spacings while giving very consistent illumination without hot spots or shadows.      For more info on this Prism see details later in listing.

Save Cash up Front!

Combining pulse start bulbs and ballasts with prismatic optics cuts down on the number of fixtures required for a given light level. Even though the fixtures you do buy may cost more for each one, the total cost to get the same number of foot candles is usually a lot less.

It doesn’t turn PINK!

If you look at standard metal halide fixtures, you’ll notice that the bulbs turn pink as they age! Pulse Start Metal halide stays nice and bright and white! (Interesting details on how pink light affects people and animals later)

Keep Electric Rates Down!
…w/Energy Efficient Lighting

These Pulse Start systems cause less pollution than ordinary metal halide systems. They keep electric demand down too, and that helps everyone!

The future of Metal Halide Lighting is
PULSE START!

This fixture uses the same technology used in those new gas station canopy lights that are so, so much brighter than the old ones!

It has manifold advantages over conventional “probe start” metal halide:

  • Pulse Start Bulbs Start Out Brighter and maintain 80% of their initial light output at median life.
  • Common metal halide bulbs only maintain 65% of their initial light output at median life and keep losing output.

A pulse start 400 w bulbs make 44,000 initial lms and 35,200 lumens at median life. This compares to regular 400 w metal halide that only starts out at 36,000 lms and has a median output of only 23,400 to 26,000 lms

  • These Nice lights don’t turn PINK!
  • Take a close look at older standard metal halide fixtures! They color shift to make pink light as the bulbs age! Yuck! Pulse Start metal halide stays nice and white through out its life!

In his classic book, Health and Light, Dr. John N.Ott recounts totally bizarre effects of pink light.  Apparently pink light will wreck the sex life of a mink. In a scientific study, ninety percent of male mink exposed to continuous pink light were experimentally found to be sexually “non-working” and female mink required pregnant mare serum hormone shots to achieve pregnancy.

Four pink mink died prematurely due to a strange malady and the pink treated mink also become aggressive.

Questionnaires given to college students indicated that there might be a link between wearing pink tinted sunglasses and emotional disturbances. Based upon this research, John Ott recommended to the Kansas City Royals that players switch from pink tinted to medium gray glasses. The director Syd Thrift wrote back to John Ott “It was amazing to observe how the player was changed from a hyper-aggressive and helmet-throwing player to a very relaxed, confident person” , pg 116, supra

But you don’t have to be in the pink! Pulse start metal halide bulbs don’t have the electrode problems that cause this color shift!

  • Fast Starting and Restarting.
  • Standard metal halide bulbs need to sizzle for 8-12 minutes before they fully come on. As a result, many people are forced to leave regular metal halide fixtures on all day so they are not in the dark In just 100 seconds, a pulse start lamp is running at 25% power and it reaches full brightness in 180 seconds. In 3 minutes a regular metal halide bulb has barely even started.

  • Waste less time and money changing light bulbs.
  • A pulse start bulb lasts 26.6 times longer than conventional incandescent. And since one metal halide bulb replace 5.77 three hundred watt bulbs, you’d have to change 153 regular light bulbs to get the same number of lumen-hours of life.

Save up to $2225.35 on energy vs. incandescent! A single fixture replaces 5.77 three hundred watt incandescent bulbs but uses only 455 watts of energy. Over the 20,000 hour rated life of a pulse start metal halide it uses that much less energy than those 300 watt bulbs! [$.0872/Kwhr x 5.77 bulbs x 300 watts x20 Khrs/bulb =$2225.35 on national average rate]

  • Don’t buy a fly & dust catcher!
  • There are some really crummy low bay fixtures around. They catch flies and dust that get trapped inside! The debris settles on the bottom lens and blocks your light. Once it gets inside, dust sticks like a magnet to the reflector and fouls it!

The problem is that it is tough to seal where the reflector and the ballast enclosure meet. Usually the bulb just sticks through a hole in the top of the reflector that provides an entrance for dirt to settle on the bottom lens.

    This is shown below:

Our prismatic refractor does not have this problem as the bottom is open. The refractor also serves as a thermal chimney that induces convective air currents to naturally scrub itself clean!

      Prismatic Optics are the Best
  • They work in BOTH HIGH and LOW BAYs
    •
The prism on this fixture makes it superior to either conventional High Bay or Low Bay fixtures. By scientifically bending light down, this fixture will deliver higher light levels on the horizontal plane than high or low bay fixtures. At the same time it produces very good illumination on vertical surfaces.

“High bay” fixtures normally have spun aluminum reflectors that must be hung very high. If they are hung low, they only produce a little pool of light on the floor. About 23% of the light generated by the bulb is trapped in internal reflections.

The optics on “Low Bay” fixtures are really high bay reflectors that are “wrecked” with white paint. The white paint and lens helps scatter the light. But the white paint further destroys the efficiency of the fixture. Light is trapped rattling around inside of the fixture. Only 74.6% of the light produced by the bulb actually gets out of the fixture.

Our fixtures prismatic refractors deliver about 90.9% of the light of the light produced by the bulb. While at the same time, the horizontal utilization coefficient, the ability of the fixture to direct light on a horizontal plane, is higher than a typical high bay fixture.

But most importantly the patented prismatic refractor delivers “3-D” illumination.
  • “3-D” Illumination Keeps you from working in a Cave!
  • The problem with conventional metal halide fixtures is that they just put pools of light on the floor. Little light is cast on vertical surfaces. So you in a repair shop, you can’t see in wheel wells. Or in a warehouse, light is not shed on the vertical faces of pallet racks.

Conventional metal halide fixtures create a cave like atmospheres with dark ceilings and walls.

Our fixtures prismatic refractor bends light down from the ceiling in all directions. So you can see every where you look! Excellent uniform lighting is produced! It makes indoor spaces appear larger and more spacious.

  • Achieve Uniform Lighting with Larger Fixture Spacings.
  • A standard type of low bay or high bay light mainly directs light straight down. So the highest light levels are produced directly underneath the light fixture. You see, light levels approximately drop off according to an inverse square law. So when you get twice the distance from a constant source, the light level is only at one fourth intensity. So light levels drop off steeply as you get further away from the fixture.

How far do I put the fixtures apart? How many do I need?
People looking for minimal light levels to see by have put this style of fixture 80’ apart. The prismatic refractor on this fixture has a semi-indirect light distribution. This means about 19 % of the bulbs output bounces off the ceiling and upper walls. This scatters light all over the place. So you don’t have dark shadowed areas.

The main beam of this fixture is in an approximate 50 degree cone. This beam spread is adjustable. So this fixture will very nicely light up a circle 2.38 to 2.85 times the mounting height of the fixture. But normally, you don’t have to concern yourself with this. Usually the number of fixtures is controlled by the light levels you are shooting for.

With most practical fixture layouts, the number of fixtures you need depends upon what you are doing in the space, how reflective room surfaces are, and a height aspect ratio.

If you email us with this information, we can supply you with a suggested layout. Click Here

Otherwise, here are typical light levels produced in foot candles (fc)

        24’x 48’ w/4 fixtures @ 16’high

        Dirty White Walls……….64 fc
        Unpainted Wood Walls….53 fc
        or Foil Back Insulation

        40’x 40’ w/5 fixtures @ 16’ high

        Dirty White Walls……….64 fc
        Unpainted Wood Walls….54 fc
        or Foil Back Insulation

        80’x 120’ w/24 fixtures 23’ high

        Bright White Walls………78 fc
        Dirty White Walls……….61 fc
        Foil Back Insulation……..60 fc

Notes: The above light levels after the bulb has aged to median output. Dirty white walls are approximately 50% reflective. Due to dirt films, white walls are rarely more reflective than this.

To get the fixtures required for other room sizes, scale up or down the above fixture counts by proportion. For instance, if you need to light up twice the area, double the number of fixtures. Need a third more light, add a third more fixtures.

How High should I hang the fixtures? How do I lay them Out?

It’s generally advantageous to hang fixtures as low as possible as this will increase average light levels. The lowest mounting height I’d recommend is about 12’.

To get even lighting you generally will want to run staggered rows where the fixtures in one row fill out the “holes” in the others. See the illustration to the right.

        X     X

Usually the toughest place to light is the area near the edges of a space. So more fixtures go in the outer rows than the inner ones. I hardly ever put in a single row of lights down the center of an area. I’ll stagger them instead. For instance, a two row layout looks like this illustration to the right.

In a really small shop, I may put two lights in kitty corner from each other, as in the illustration to the right.
