Spectacular pair of antique French doors salvaged from Southeastern Pennsylvania. Each door is made of solid chestnut and features 15 beveled glass lites. At the point of salvage, the doors were completely painted, had 3 cracked lites, and were without passage hardware. Since then, we’ve stripped the paint, replaced the 3 lites, cleaned the flush bolts, and added antique passage hardware.
This is truly a great deal! Just to give you an idea of how expensive 3/8” thick beveled glass is; we paid $160.00 just for the 3 replacement lites. At that rate, both doors have about $1,600.00 worth of glass alone! On top of that, the wood is chestnut, a rare and valuable wood, which has not been commercially available since the early 1900’s!
The door with the knobs was trimmed at some point, most likely to compensate for the swelling or warping of an old wooden floor. There is a half-inch slope from the top of the lock stile to the top of hinge style. We were going to trim both doors to 82”, but figured: what if someone wants to use them as 2 single doors and needs 1 to be 83”, or what if someone wants to use them as pocket doors? However, if you would like us to even the doors to 82”, please let us know after the auction, and we’ll do it free of charge.
Someone at one point also removed the original passage hardware, partially filled the mortise, made a 2.5” W hole, and added modern hardware. Before adding the 2 glass knobs, 2 decorative copper escutcheons, and lock, we patched up some of the hole and some of the mortise with wood filler. Those cream or peach colored spots around the passage set is filler, which is stainable and would blend in better once stained. The flush bolts are fully functional and operate very well.
Fully restored and in excellent shape; these fine beauties from the late 1800’s are ready to install. French doors make a grand aesthetic impact wherever they are installed—especially French doors with 30 beveled lites!
