Handcrafted Pair of Osage Orange Wood ~   3.78 and 4.20 '' Pipe Tampers

one is pointed, the other spoon shaped to aid in cleaning the pipe

Used for tamping down the tobacco in a pipe

Tampers: a tamper is a blunt instrument, either a simple dowel or shaped like the top of a nail, with a flat end for tamping down the tobacco when a pipe bowl is being packed, and for crushing the ash together to aid relighting.

Mine are hand made one-of-a-kinds.  No two are exactly alike as they are made one at a time on my lathe and hand polished with only foodsafe carnuba wax, (apples, pears, etc. are sprayed with a form of carnauba to achieve their polished look).  

One of these handcrafted tampers would make a unique gift for a pipe smoker. 

The Wood: Osage Orange - aka (Maclura pomifera) -  a heavy, closely grained yellow-orange wood is very dense and is prized for tool handles, tree nails, fence posts, electrical insulators and other applications requiring a strong dimensionally-stable wood that withstands rot. Straight-grained osage timber (most is knotty and twisted) makes very good bows. Additionally, a yellow-orange dye can be extracted from the wood.
