Paiute Indian 1874 Stereoview by Hillers Powell Survey

1874 stereoview photo of Ku-Ra-Tu of the Paiute Indian tribe, taken on the John Wesley Powell Geological Survey in Arizona. From the Indians of the Colorado Valley series #8. Photographer is John Hillers, (1843 – 1925), who was a government photographer. He was originally hired as a boatman for a geographical survey expedition led by John Wesley Powell in 1871, and became the expedition photographer in 1872. He went on to spend twenty years exploring and photographing the American west, eventually focusing on ethnology, and is known particularly for his portraits of Native Americans.
