Magdalenian ( 17000 – 11000 BP )

It is difficult to speak about the magdalenien in general because there are so many things to say. All the collectors know the abundant literature on the most famous sites: La Madeleine (the eponym site) Laugerie, le Placard… and on the magdalenian art : Lascaux, Altamira, Rouffignac, Font-de-Gaume and so much of others. I would make just a little development on lithic industry. The magdalenian is characterized by a particularly advanced control of the debitage, especially in the technique of blades debitage, much of tools or flint projectile points are made on blades. Breuil and Peyrony built a diagram of the evolution of the magdalenian according to the excavations which had been made on the great sites of Dordogne and Pyrenees. This diagram rests on typical tools especially in antlers (assegais, harpoons), although the magdalenian comprises also many other types of tools (burins, scrapers, borers) which were found also in all the periods of the upper paleolithic. It is still discussed to know if these subsystems could be chronologically linear ou simultaneous ; in the same way, other type of magdalenian lithic industries were found in Germany, in Poland or in Spain and call it in question.

Diagram of Breuil and Peyrony :

Magdalenian 0 ( earlier Badegoulian) : transversal burin (+ raclettes, borers in star ). Magdalenian 1 (Typical Badegoulian) : assagai with beveled base striated, numerous raclettes. Magdalenian 2 : assagai with a conical base. Magdalenian 3 : assagai with beveled base and with one or two grooves, scalene triangle. Magdalenian 4 : assagai with simple bevel, proto harpoon, half round stick and isocele triangle.Magdalenian 5 : assagai with with double beveled base, harpoon with one line of barbs. Magdalenian 6 : assagai with double beveled base, harpoon with two lines of barbs, burin “bec de perroquet”, notched point, tanged point.
