Panerai is the most famous Italian watch company. But keep in mind, Panerai is now produced in Switzerland, not Italy. Originally founded in Florence in the 1860’s, this “watch workshop” was commissioned by the Italian Navy to produce a watch that could be easily read underwater. The early prototype was actually fitted with Rolex parts.
Giovanni Panerai and his family had no idea, back in 1860, just how significant the Panerai watch company would become a century and a half later. Panerai started his business by producing measurement and precision systems for the Italian Navy, which gradually lead to an affinity for watchmaking and other precision instruments. The company continued to develop in parallel with the Italian Navy, and the commandos were equipped with wristwatches produced by Panerai. In 1930, Panerai watches were well known in the Italian military and the company had an exclusive contract with the Navy to produce their watches and aiming sites for various types of weaponry. The ruggedness and durability of the Panerai watches is still symbolic today, and the company only started producing wristwatches for the general public in 1993.
Created in 1938 for the Royal Italian Navy as the first Panerai watch, the Radiomir was characterized by its large size and water-resistant case, the legibility of the dial in immersion, its robustness in extreme use conditions, a reliable movement. Presented in 1997 in the Replica version, an edition limited to 60 units, the Radiomir became a rarity much sought after by collectors throughout the world for the restrained elegance of its design, with its cushion case, wire loop strap attachments and for the technical features of the used mechanisms: reliable haute horlogerie movements. Originally welded to the case, today the strap attachments are fixed by an exclusive system of screws (patented), developed by Panerai, which makes it very easy to change the strap.
The Radiomir Black Seal® Automatic inherits the historic model’s stricking personality; it is a "time only" watch of generous size (45 mm) made from AISI 316L steel. More in keeping with contemporary trends, this format celebrates the elegance of the design and the slenderness of the cushion-shaped Case, which combines structural robustness, confirmed by Water Resistance to 100 meters, with the Screw-Down winding Crown and Caseback. This model is equipped with the calibre OPIII, an Automatic Mechanical Movement whose finish is reinforced by its Côtes de Genève decoration. It features a Black Dial with Arabic Numerals and Luminous Hour Markers, Continuous Seconds at 9 o’clock and Magnified Date Display Window at 3 o'clock.

Glucydur® balance, 28,800 alternations/hour. Incabloc® anti-shock device. Power reserve 42 hours. Chronometer Certificate (C.O.S.C.). Functions: hours, minutes, small seconds, date. Case: diameter 45 mm, polished Stainless Steel with removable wire loop strap attachments (patented). Winding crown personalized OP. Bezel: polished steel. Caseback: screw, steel. Crystal: sapphire, made from corundum, 1.9 mm thick, magnifying lens at 3 o’clock with Anti-reflective coating. Water Resistant to 100 meters. Strap: Panerai personalised alligator strap and polished steel Deployant Buckle. Limited Edition of only 1500 pieces worldwide.
Personal Note--Panerai is one of my all time favorite brands. I have an extensive coolection of them and wear them all the time. This one is from the Radiomir collection, which is a simple straight-forward design. I love it. Panerais are great collector's pieces, and this one is a limited edition which makes it a great investment.
