19th Century Wonderful Papier Mache Footed Tea Caddywhich has Exceptional Mother of Pearl Inlay & Decorative Painting and is an Architectual Beauty. It has a stepped up Pagoda shape lid with a bouquet of mother of pearl & painted flowers in the center with a rectangular mother of pearl edge, then the lid tapers down with a scrolling pattern of mother of pearl bits and flares out to another MOP edge which features rectangular pieces. Under the lid the front and back has gold leaves tied with gold scrolling foliate garlands, soft delicate sprays and whisps with green and white berries. The two sides have painted bouquets of gold leaves and red berries. It sits on 4 extended splade feet which adds architectual drama. The caddy measures 9 1/2" long x 5 1/2" high x 6 1/2" deep with a hinged lid and 2 lidded compartments for tea. To give an accurate description of condition I will have to look for flaws which are not obvious. The tiny lock receiver in the lid is missing along with the key and there is loss to interior tea paper. The hinges work, the top fits well without gaping, there is no missing Mother of Pearl, the decorative painting looks really good except for a little rubbing near the feet from handling. In looking at the bottom it looks has though a small piece has been reglued but it doesn't show on the top side, my guess is that if it has been repaired it was done by a skilled professional. This is a great piece. |
