Patchouli General Information


For centuries, Patchouli oil has been used in the East to scent clothes and linen, but it was also believed to prevent the spread of disease. In China, Japan and Malaysia the oil was used to treat colds, headaches, nausea, diarrhea and abdominal pain. In the 1960s, Patchouli became popular as an aphrodisiac.

 

Patchouli Uses & Scientific Evidence

Today Patchouli is used for its astringent qualities. The oil is useful for scalp and skin conditions including dandruff, acne, eczema and scars. Using Patchouli in inhalation, baths, and massage has an uplifting effect on depression and anxiety, and can help alleviate fluid retention. Using small quantities of Patchouli oil will have a stimulating effect; while larger doses are more sedative. Patchouli is often worn as a perfume and used for an exotic, sensual massage.
