Patek Philippe is considered by many as the best Swiss watch manufacturer in the world. The brand was founded in 1851 and made their first wristwatch in 1868. The company is currently owned by Henri Stern and his family. The Stern family greatly values the Patek Philippe signature motto, which reads, “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely take care of it for the next generation.” Patek manufactures all of the movements for their watches in-house and is most well known for their Calatrava, Gondolo, Nautilus and Grand Complication models.

Patek Philippe watches win the hearts of watch aficionados due to traditionally elegant shapes developed for lovers of classic style. More specifically, the Calatrava models have a few major distinctions, classic round-shaped thin cases, large Roman numerals, gracious porcelain dials, and elegant leather straps.
The company launched the first Calatrava watch in 1932, more than seventy years ago. It had a round case, modern style and was considered to be peculiar for clear design and ideal proportions. The Calatrava timepiece has a foothold on the prestigious list of the iconic classically styled watches. During the life of the Calatrava, newer models have emerged, yet all of them have been inspired by the the initial idea and mirror the aesthetic beauty of the first model, remaining devoted to distinctively simple lines and maintaining unsurpassed refinement.
The story of the watch's name is remarkable. 'Calatrava' was the name of a Spanish Order of Knighthood established in the 12th century. It is the Calatrava Cross which Patek uses as their logo (which was used back then as the Knighthood's emblem).
In fact, the Calatrava case was meant to reflect the philosophy of the Bauhaus school of art and architecture established in Germany. The school valued the principle that form should follow function. As the major function of any watch is timekeeping, Patek Philippe wanted to design a watch that would feature no extra details.
The featured watch is a Patek Philippe Calatrava 3919J in 18K Gold measuring 33.5mm in diameter. It is the company’s proud signature model and is completely made of self-made extensively tested and certified components, from the Alligator Strap to the Mechanical Movement. It has a stunning white porcelain dial with Black Hand-Painted Roman Numerals, Sculpted Hour and Minute Hands at Center, and a Sub-Seconds Subdial at 6 o'clock. It has a solid caseback and comes with a Tang Buckle. Manual Wind Movement.
Personal Note--Classic elegance, sophistication, refinement at its very finest. This piece is exceptional in every way. It is the most stunning of all of the Calatrava models I have seen and the the case detail is outstanding, as well as the porcelain dial, which is rare. It has one of Patek's thinnest movements as well. Gorgeous!
