A portrait of the artist as hit singles machine, SHAKING THE TREE features Peter Gabriel's most commercial post-Genesis material in one convenient package. Every cut is superb, and the dazzling track list includes "Solsbury Hill," still rock's most eloquent resignation speech, the anti-apartheid classic "Biko," the magisterial "Don't Give Up" with Kate Bush, the MTV friendly "Shock the Monkey" and "Sledgehammer," among others. Critical carping about whether this package is representative of his oeuvre as a whole is beside the point. This is, clearly, the Peter Gabriel album you'd most want to play at a party.
| | Editorial reviews | ..Peter Gabriel's forays into African, funk, folk, techno-pop, and Motown are always tempered by the theatrical sensibility he developed as a front man in the '70s for the progressive rock group Genesis...most of the tracks are more than golden greats-- they're some of the best rock songs of the post-punk era. - Rating: A Entertainment Weekly (01/11/1991)
4 Stars - Excellent - ..Fifteen years and 16 hit singles since Genesis, Peter Gabriel still has the touch. Q (01/01/1991)
