Peter Murphy of Bauhaus Original Artwork by James O'Barr Oil- 12" x 16" ![]() (Watermark and website name are not on the actual painting!) James wrote: I get asked frequently who the character of the Crow, Eric, is based on
and this here's the guy, Peter Murphy. If you don't know who Peter Murphy
is you are obligated to gather up all your black clothing and
immediately make a large donation to the Salvation Army (because Gothic
shouldn't be a fashion statement) and then go rent The Hunger and watch
the first 15 minutes repeatedly. I saw Bauhaus in Germany way back at the
dawn of time, back when vinyl records were not just a costly
affectation, back when the band were very young, hungry, ambitious, but
still a little arrogant. They may not have invented Goth but they sure
painted it up like a tart and paraded it across the stage. Peter Murphy
is the last true vampire and there is more calcium in his cheek bones
than the White Cliffs of Dover. Thirty years later he still has striking
features, and dear God, does the spotlight love him (almost as much as he
loves it, I suspect). This painting is a sort of exercise is restraint, with little subtle variations in white and sepia. Not an easy thing to do with oils paint. Bela Lugosi's Dead, undead undead... James |
